Step 1: Dream BigWriting and publishing a book has been an ambition of mine for a while, but it's one that I haven't had the chutzpah to pursue... until now. Thanks to encouragement, gentle pushes, and some mild goading from friends and the Universe, I took a leap and created this project: "TODDLERHOOD: Reality Abstracted".
This project brings together so many of the things that not only make me this particular Jessica, but also things I want to encourage others to see and experience. This is my first book and my first big professional project after becoming a mom. Step 2: Make it HappenI started taking photos with my daughter throughout the day, whenever the light caught something in an interesting way. As a busy mom, carrying my DSLR around in case something cool happened wasn't really an option, but I almost always have my trusty Pixel 8 Pro in my pocket - ready to capture these moments.
I used Google Photos to keep my images organized, and after I had a collection together, I sat down and created this book. It's a peek into the daily life of a mom and a toddler. But more than that, it's designed to be an invitation to start conversations, get creative, and view your world from a different perspective. Straddling the line between realism and abstraction, I wanted to focus on the shapes, colors, and textures of the things we encounter in the most mundane ways - highlighting how extraordinary they can be. This is an incredible journey of learning and exploration for me. I've employed the tools and talents both from my professional and educational experiences, reached out to new people, met with an editor, and received quotes to produce this book as a board book, made especially for little hands. We conducted a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund the first run of its production. We are now taking preorders while the first 500 book are in production.
