THE CONCEPTWriting and publishing a book has been an ambition of mine for a while - but it's one I haven't had the chutzpah to pursue... until now.
Thanks to encouragement, gentle pushes, and some mild goading from friends/the Universe, I took a leap and brought "TODDLERHOOD: Reality Abstracted" to life. This project, my first book, was designed to encourage others to see and experience the world with the wonder of a toddler. THE BOOKI started taking photos with my daughter throughout the day, whenever the light caught something in an interesting way. As a new mom, carrying my DSLR around in case something cool happened wasn't an option. Having my trusty Pixel 8 Pro in my pocket, on the other hand, gave me the chance to capture these moments.
I used Google Photos to catalog my images and keep them organized. Once I had a large enough collection of photos and ideas, I created poetry to accompany the images. Consulting with an editor, doing market research, finding and working with a commercial printer, I designed this book, laid it out using Adobe InDesign, ran a successful Kickstarted campaign to print the first run, and sold nearly 150 copies in its first year on the market. This book is a peek into the daily life of a mom and a toddler. It is designed to be an invitation to start conversations, get creative, and view your world from a different perspective. Straddling the line between realism and abstraction, I focused on the shapes, colors, and textures of the things we encounter in the most mundane ways - highlighting how extraordinary they can be.
