TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Curiosity, creativity, and tenacity are the tenets on which my teaching philosophy is built. When I design coursework and present materials, my goal is for students to leave my classroom/lab enriched with knowledge and tools so they are empowered to use them. In this digital era, I fully embrace technology. My cameras are as much a part of me as my fingertips. But as someone who found their voice in traditional media (a high school darkroom, working with film photography), I see the ever-changing media landscape as one that is best navigated with a map whose key spans many modalities and media types. That is to say: I design courses and educational experiences that do not myopically focus on a single program or skill. I believe strongly in knowing your audience and meeting them where they are. Proficiency is worthless without intention. Every class and group of students is an opportunity to grow and learn as an educator. VIC3001: "SIGHT, SOUND, AND MOTION" This class is largely an introduction to the Adobe Creative Suite and Design Principles in which I lead students in working on and off their computers to understand the concepts behind the tools. We meet twice a week: 2 hours on Tuesdays and 1 hour on Thursdays. Our 2 hour classes are focused on live demonstrations and hands-on learning sessions where students work along with me to build technical and design skills. At the end of each week, we have a collaborative conversation/discussion about the concepts learned and look for real world applications - considering how effective they are, in and out of context. EXAMPLE OF CREATIVE INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN I am very much looking forward to our branding and design day - a lesson that incorporates visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning modalities as well as digital and analog techniques. The first 6 modules of our class introduce fundamental branding and design concepts. In Module 2, I began talking about individuality in branding and how to start thinking about the way choices in colors, fonts, and organization help us develop our professional voices. On our branding and design day, a 2 hour session, students will use collage techniques to create a physical mood board. We will then photograph and digitize them using on-hand devices (likely cellphone cameras). Employing native Adobe tools like fonts.adobe.com and color.adobe.com/ , we will turn their physical creations into both a standardized Mood Board in Photoshop and a Style Guide in InDesign. These two assets will become the foundation for the creation of their portfolio websites - the final project for this course. |
